Florian Kirchbuchner

Florian Kirchbuchner is Deputy Head of the Infrastructure and Public Services business area at Fraunhofer IGD, where he is responsible for the topic area of security and emergency preparedness. He previously headed the Smart Living & Biometric Technologies department. His research and transfer activities focus on privacy-preserving biometric systems, secure digital identities, cybersecurity, sensor-based systems, and AI-supported applications in security-related and socially relevant fields.

During his eight years of service in the German Armed Forces, he trained as an IT systems electronics technician and took part in several overseas deployments. After completing his service, he studied computer science with psychology as a minor subject at Technische Universität Darmstadt, graduating with a Master of Science degree in 2014. He has been working at Fraunhofer IGD ever since, and has held leadership positions since 2018.

As a Principal Investigator at the National Research Center for Applied Cybersecurity ATHENE, Florian Kirchbuchner works on issues related to the security, reliability, and data protection of biometric and AI-based systems. He also contributes his expertise to international standardization work within ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 37. He is the co-author of numerous scientific publications and is engaged in interdisciplinary research and transfer projects.

In 2023, Florian Kirchbuchner co-founded the non-profit association Team Innovative Pflege e.V. and served as speaker of the Fraunhofer Alliance Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) from 2019 to 2022. He is currently preparing the establishment of the Hessian Sensor Technology Cluster, which aims to connect stakeholders from academia, industry, and the public sector in Hesse and accelerate the transfer of sensor-based technologies into practical application.
