UniPort 4.0 – Digitalization of Universal Ports

Application scenario: A warning signal informs the port authority in real time if parts of the cargo fall into the water during loading, thereby posing a potential risk to ships in the fairway.

By using digital sensors and targeted digital data collection, universal ports have the opportunity to develop solutions that help them catch up in the necessary digitalization process and remain competitive. The guiding vision of the project partners was to advance the further digitalization of universal ports through this initiative, thereby creating the necessary prerequisites for the control, monitoring, and optimization of relevant port processes. The foundation for this was to be flexible methods and procedures developed within the project.

The project started on April 1, 2019.

The aim of the project was to develop suitable approaches for the modular integration of optical and acoustic sensors and their real-time data analysis—ideally directly at the digital sensor using edge computing. The intended solution was to be implemented as a distributed system in order to keep data transfer rates per camera field low and achieve good scalability. Another objective of this work package was the implementation of appropriate methods for photogrammetric volume determination of bulk material (“optical weighing”) based on a multi-view stereo approach. In line with the identified requirements, this work package also developed the necessary methods and procedures for high-quality control and event detection in sea-based roundwood handling (underwater microphone). In addition, client- and server-side components were implemented according to the planned microservice architecture, taking into account sensor-related module structures and services (including cloudification of services when necessary).
