Jugend forscht, Fraunhofer Darmstadt – Winners

The Best Young Researchers

The winners of the Jugend forscht South Hessen regional competition have been announced. They were honored at an award ceremony held at Fraunhofer LBF on February 15. The Fraunhofer institutes in Darmstadt, which serve as patrons of the competition, are delighted by the strong public response and wish all participants continued success with their research ideas.

The best projects of the 59th round of the Jugend forscht competition in the South Hessen regional contest have now been selected. At the venue in Darmstadt-Kranichstein, the enthusiasm of all participants was clearly palpable. Competition Director Dr. Mathias Schott summed it up as follows: “Clarifying scientific questions for oneself and for others with enjoyment and enthusiasm—that’s what research is all about.” All winners can be viewed on the competition’s website.

Public Interest in Science and Research

Regional newspapers, radio, and television also attended the presentations of the young researchers’ projects. Mayor Hanno Benz likewise took time to meet the young scientists. Together with Tobias Melz, Institute Director of Fraunhofer LBF, he visited the presentation booths and listened with great interest to the young people’s explanations. “There are some truly exciting projects here!” the mayor remarked with enthusiasm.

The Largest Competition for Young Scientists

As part of efforts to promote young talent, the competition is indispensable. Founded in 1965, it is now the largest science competition for young people in Europe. Organized by the Jugend forscht e. V. foundation, it is held at three levels. The winners of the South Hessen regional competition have qualified for the Hessen state competition, which will take place for the “Schüler experimentieren” category on March 15–16, 2024 at the University of Kassel, and for the “Jugend forscht” category from March 20–21 at Merck in Darmstadt. The winners there will then go on to compete in the national finals.
