Darmstadt – Around 80 representatives from science, business, and politics gathered yesterday at the 2nd Darmstadt Sensor Technology Day at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt. The central topic of the event was the establishment of a Hessian Sensor Technology Cluster.

The event was organized by HEAG Holding AG and the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD, together with the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. Expert presentations from academia and industry showcased applications in areas such as space technology, energy-efficient sensor systems, and intelligent edge technologies.

Association to Strengthen Networking and Technology Transfer

For the first time, the initiators presented the draft statutes of the planned association, “Hessian Sensor Technology Cluster e.V.” The network aims to bring research institutions, companies, and start-ups closer together and accelerate the transfer of new technologies into practical applications.

“With the planned cluster, we want to make existing expertise in Hesse more visible, connect stakeholders in a targeted way, and accelerate the transfer of sensor technology solutions into real-world applications,”

said Florian Kirchbuchner, Head of Department at Fraunhofer IGD.

Sensor Technology as a Key Future Technology

The establishment of the cluster follows recommendations from the Hessian Future Economic Report and aligns with the Hessian Coalition Agreement 2024–2029. Sensor technology is regarded as a fundamental enabler of intelligent systems, ranging from connected production facilities to autonomous mobility solutions.

The initiative has received support from Hanno Benz, Mayor of the City of Darmstadt, and Prof. Dr. Kristina Sinemus, Hessian Minister for Digital Strategy and Innovation, who serves as the project’s patron and addressed participants through a welcoming message.

“Darmstadt and Hesse are a hotspot for sensor technology. With leading research institutions such as Fraunhofer IGD, TU Darmstadt, and the GSI Helmholtz Centre, as well as numerous companies and start-ups, the region already possesses outstanding expertise in data-driven technologies. Further strengthening this location and bringing together stakeholders from research, business, and politics even more closely is a key driver of innovation,”

said Prof. Dr. Kristina Sinemus, Hessian Minister for Digital Strategy and Innovation.

Workshop Defines Next Steps

In addition to the presentation program, participants discussed the next concrete steps for the coming twelve months in a dedicated workshop. Key topics included:

  • The future structure and responsibilities of the planned association
  • Potential membership models
  • Visibility and communication strategies for the network
  • The transfer of research results into industry and practical applications

Strengthening Darmstadt and Hesse as a Sensor Technology Location

“The establishment of the Hessian Sensor Technology Cluster will sustainably strengthen Darmstadt as a center for innovation and technology. For economic development, the cluster offers significant opportunities to connect research institutions, companies, and start-ups even more closely and to foster new value creation in future-oriented fields such as sensor technology and artificial intelligence here in Darmstadt. The 2nd Darmstadt Sensor Technology Day clearly demonstrates the enormous potential of this cluster,” said Hanno Benz, Mayor of the City of Science Darmstadt.

The planned cluster is intended to expand across the entire state of Hesse and promote both national and international cooperation. The initiative aims to accelerate development processes, enable new partnerships, and strengthen Hesse’s position as a technology and innovation hub in the long term.
