Forensic Audio Analysis for Law Enforcement

The Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT in Ilmenau conducts cutting-edge research on AI-based analysis of audio and video data – with applications in media, industry, as well as in bioacoustics and environmental monitoring. To this end, the institute develops intelligent sensor systems, analysis tools, and technologies for privacy‑compliant processing of personal and confidential data.

With the Audio Forensic Toolbox, Fraunhofer IDMT is presenting a broad range of cutting-edge, explainable audio analysis tools at GPEC 2026 designed to support law enforcement and security authorities in verifying the authenticity, origin, and integrity of audio and video content.

At GPEC, Fraunhofer IGD will present mission-oriented technologies for police, law enforcement, and security authorities. The exhibits range from digital evidence preservation and secure identity verification to real-time sensing, complex cyber data analysis, and immersive training environments — all aimed at accelerating operational processes and supporting reliable decision-making.

3D Digitization of Seized Evidence (CultArm3D) – in cooperation with Verus Digital GmbH

In collaboration with its spin-off Verus Digital, Fraunhofer IGD will showcase CultArm3D, a solution for the standardized 3D digitization of forensic evidence. The modular system enables a largely autonomous workflow and delivers consistent, reproducible results. A wide variety of evidence items can be captured contactlessly and documented as precise 3D models — ensuring court-admissible preservation, structured archiving, and location-independent examination.

Deepfake Detection in ID Documents

This technology detects manipulated biometric photographs, particularly face-morphing attacks, thereby strengthening the security of identity verification processes. At GPEC, visitors can directly analyze genuine and manipulated document images and understand which image features the system uses to identify tampering. The exhibit demonstrates in practical terms how verification processes can be made more robust and transparent.

Real-Time Identification in Crowds

This solution enables reliable identification of individuals even in dynamic, densely crowded scenarios. With real-time capability and scalability, it supports search operations and large-scale deployments, contributing to faster, data-driven situational assessments.

Real-Time Drone and Object Detection Using Event Cameras

This novel sensor system is based on an event-driven camera that captures only relevant changes in brightness. Compared to conventional video systems, this significantly reduces data volume and enables extremely fast response times without motion blur. Its robust performance even under challenging lighting conditions improves the early detection of drones and fast-moving objects in sensitive operational areas.

Interactive Solutions for Cyber Anomaly Detection

Fraunhofer IGD develops interactive analysis tools for evaluating large data volumes in cyber and security contexts — particularly PCAP (packet capture) data. The goal is optimized data analysis: simpler, faster, and more targeted. AI-based methods identify anomalous patterns in network traffic, while interactive visualizations allow transparent exploration and in-depth analysis of correlations. This enables efficient structuring of complex datasets and supports well-founded assessments.

Training and Simulation with “Next Reality”

With “Next Reality,” Fraunhofer IGD presents an immersive training and simulation environment for security forces. Realistic scenarios can be flexibly configured, repeated, and systematically evaluated. The platform supports operational preparation, reduces training risks, and enables structured analysis of decision-making processes.

RealOrRender: Transparent Detection of Deepfake Images

In a world where generative AI models produce images that are hardly distinguishable from real photographs, new creative and industrial opportunities arise — but also significant risks, particularly through potential disinformation.

In a joint project with the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), Fraunhofer IOSB presents innovative approaches to technically address these challenges. The project combines a classical deep learning classifier with a novel reconstruction method to assess how well an image can be reproduced by a generative AI model. Large deviations indicate a real photograph, ensuring high detection accuracy even with advanced AI models.

Another key focus is explainability: Fraunhofer IOSB applies explainable AI methods to transparently demonstrate why an image is classified as real or AI-generated. Relevant image regions are highlighted, and decision-making processes are clearly explained.

Based on a comprehensive, self-generated test dataset, the institute demonstrates that its methods outperform many common research approaches. The project thus provides a robust, practical solution for media organizations, authorities, and institutions that depend on reliable AI-based image verification.

Modular drone detection and assistance system (MODEAS)

Protection against drone threats has become increasingly critical. Sensitive sites and critical infrastructure are being surveilled, disrupted, or even attacked in crisis regions. To protect people and infrastructure, systems for automatic drone detection and real-time situational awareness are essential in order to quickly assess threats and initiate appropriate countermeasures.

Fraunhofer IOSB presents the multisensor system MODEAS for detecting, classifying, and tracking approaching (mini) drones. The system architecture is modular and consists of multiple networked sensor stations. Currently, the system integrates radar and wide-angle cameras to generate initial detections and uses robust AI-based video analysis methods to verify and track drones.

All available information is integrated in real time into a 2D/3D situational display and linked with context-based assistance functions to optimally support decision-makers in assessing situations and weighing countermeasures.

A key advantage of optical drone detection and classification is the ability to identify a drone’s payload as an indicator of threat potential. Furthermore, visual drone images can be interpreted more quickly by humans, enabling better assessment of potential danger.
