For Successful Research Transfers: Fraunhofer IGD Nominated for the 2025 Validation Award
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) awards the Validation Prize every two years. The prize honors three projects from the VIP+ funding program ("Validation of the Technological and Social Innovation Potential of Scientific Research") that have been particularly successfully implemented in practice after the end of their funding. Among the nominees for the 2025 award is the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD with its research project Robust3D.
Robust3D: Automated 3D Print Preparation for Error-Free Production
In the Robust3D project, led by Dr. Philipp Urban, a new technology was developed and successfully scientifically validated. This technology enables reliable and automated 3D printing of faulty models. The method automatically detects and corrects typical problems in 3D data—such as holes, incomplete edges, or areas that are too thin. As a result, manual intervention is only needed in exceptional cases. The validation confirmed that the technology ensures demonstrably safe printability, opening up new possibilities for customized series production in 3D printing.
Following successful validation, the technology was integrated into the 3D printer driver Cuttlefish and licensed globally. It is now used in various industries, including leading technology companies, the film and entertainment industry, 3D printer manufacturers, and the gaming industry. Additionally, it is applied in the medical field, particularly in the production of aesthetic prostheses such as eye and dental prosthetics.
In addition to Robust3D, seven other innovative projects were nominated for the Validation Award. An overview of all nominated projects can be found here: Validation Awards 2025: The Eight Nominated Projects Have Been Announced — VIP+
The selection of the nominated projects was made by an independent jury that evaluated the finalists based on their innovative strength and economic potential. The three award winners for 2025 will be officially announced at a later date.
