Skills Shortage in Internal Security as a Structural Challenge

Rising Demands in Internal Security: Digital Technologies Support Security Authorities

Press Releases /

Limited personnel resources and increasingly complex operational scenarios are requiring new approaches in internal security. The Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD demonstrates how digital technologies can make investigations more efficient and provide targeted support for emergency personnel in analysis and decision-making.

Police and security authorities are facing growing challenges: alongside an increasing shortage of skilled personnel, they must handle ever more complex operational situations, rising volumes of data, and new threat scenarios. Studies show that these developments are already increasing workloads and could impair operational effectiveness in the long term.

At the same time, security-related developments are becoming increasingly apparent: according to the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), more than 1,000 suspicious drone flights near critical infrastructure were reported in 2025. German Air Traffic Control (DFS) also recorded an increase from 99 incidents in 2023 to 144 by August 2025 (+45%). In cyberspace, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and CERT-Bund (Computer Emergency Response Team of the German federal administration) report a growing number of unusual network patterns and anomalies in their latest situation reports.

These developments highlight the growing demands placed on security authorities — especially in times of limited personnel resources.

Digital technologies are therefore becoming increasingly important in this context. The Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD develops solutions designed to specifically relieve operational personnel and support the analysis of complex data.
