Throwback at Intelligent Environments 2025
Where Smart Technologies Meet Societal Relevance
From June 23 to 26, 2025, the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD became the epicenter of international research on intelligent environments. The 21st International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE’25) brought together academia, industry, and society with an inspiring program full of technological visions, stimulating discussions, and personal encounters.
Workshops: Space for Exchange and New Ideas
The conference began with intensive workshops during the first two days. Depending on the topic and number of participants, formats ranged from half-day to full-day to two-day sessions — offering a wide array of subjects:
- WISHWell explored how intelligent environments can enhance healthcare — from smart patient care to everyday self-help tools.
- WORIE focused on the reliability of intelligent systems: How can we design technologies that function safely even under adverse conditions?
- ALLEGET addressed innovative AI and machine learning approaches to new societal challenges — especially in the context of social media and multimodal data.
The workshops not only delivered in-depth content but also fostered an open, collaborative atmosphere — ideal for sharing ideas and sparking new collaborations.
Keynotes: Impulses from Science and Industry
The keynote lectures by international experts were undoubtedly among the highlights of IE’25:
- Klara Nahrstedt (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) demonstrated how edge computing can revolutionize machine learning under resource constraints.
- Sumio Morioka (Interstellar Technologies Inc.) took the audience on a journey through an innovative space communication system that extends cyber-physical systems into space.
- Dirk Kutscher (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) presented forward-looking approaches to scalable and energy-efficient distributed machine learning.
Encounters, Insights, and Festive Moments
Beyond the dense academic program, IE’25 also offered numerous opportunities to connect and be inspired:
- During the demo tour at Fraunhofer IGD, participants experienced cutting-edge technologies firsthand — from smart assistance systems to AI-supported urban planning.
- The gala dinner — following an exclusive guided tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Mathildenhöhe — provided a festive highlight
A Look Ahead That Inspires
Whether in workshops, keynotes, or personal exchanges, IE’25 impressively demonstrated how interdisciplinary collaboration and technological excellence can make our environments smarter. We thank everyone involved for four exciting days full of vision, knowledge, and networking — and look forward to seeing you again at the next edition!
