Fraunhofer at digitalBau 2026

Digital solutions for the construction industry

Press Releases /

How digital technologies can make the construction industry more efficient, sustainable and connected will be showcased by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft from 24 to 26 March 2026 at the digitalBau trade fair in Cologne. In Hall 8, Booth 534, four Fraunhofer institutes will present innovative solutions across the entire construction process chain – from data acquisition and planning to energy-efficient implementation and automated assembly.

At digitalBAU 2026, Fraunhofer IPM will present the mobile sensor box MUM mini (Mobile Urban Mapping System). This multi-sensor system captures highly precise 2D and 3D data of building façades or entire streets while driving past – easily mounted on the roof of a vehicle.

As part of the flagship project BAU-DNS, Fraunhofer is actively driving transformation in the construction sector. The building industry plays a key role in achieving climate targets: around 40 percent of CO₂ emissions in Germany result from the construction and operation of buildings. To significantly reduce this share, refurbishments in particular must be carried out faster, more cost-effectively and with greater resource efficiency in the future.

The BAU-DNS project pursues three key approaches: first, the seamless use of digital data; second, the creation of sustainable processes across the entire lifecycle; and third, systemic manufacturing based on modular construction – helping to address the shortage of skilled workers as well. The construction process is consistently designed “from the end,” i.e., from deconstruction and recycling through to the reuse of regional and recycled materials.

At the digitalBau trade fair, visitors will gain insight into the project’s research results through various demonstrators, exhibits and visualizations. Four Fraunhofer institutes will show how innovative sensor technology, intelligent algorithms, sustainable materials and automated manufacturing steps can make the construction processes of tomorrow more precise, efficient and resource-saving.

  • The Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques IPM lays the foundation for the digital process chain. It demonstrates how measurement systems and intelligent data evaluation strategies can generate precise, connected data to create digital twins of buildings or built infrastructure. • The Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD is researching the digitalization and automation of planning and execution processes in construction. The focus is on modular digital twins and AI-based methods that enable efficient, consistent and resource-saving processes across the entire lifecycle. More information: Bau-DNS - Fraunhofer IGD
  • The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE focuses on integrating sustainable and energy-efficient façade technologies into digital construction processes. A multifunctional façade element combines power generation, thermal insulation and weather protection in a single component. More information: Bau-DNS – Fraunhofer ISE
  • The Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation IFF investigates how industrial manufacturing and digital processes can be brought together in construction, and shows how automated prefabrication and assembly of façade elements can contribute to a fully digitally supported construction process.
