UXO Yard

Realistic Underwater Research and Calibration Facility

The UXO Yard at the Digital Ocean Lab offers a realistic testing environment for the research and calibration of technologies designed to detect and safely remove unexploded ordnance (UXO). With a diverse range of objects and scenarios, the facility accurately simulates real-world conditions, enabling accurate analysis and practical application of detection systems.

Testing Environment

  1. Objects with Realistic Signatures
  • The UXO Yard contains a variety of objects that replicate the magnetic and electromagnetic properties of actual UXO finds.

2. Calibrated Magnetic Objects

  • Magnetic calibrated test objects are available for fine-tuning detection devices with a high degree of accuracy.

3. Non-Magnetic Objects

  • Non-magnetic objects such as aluminum and Luftmine B (LMB) dummies are provided to test and calibrate detection systems for non-ferromagnetic materials.

4. EMC (German EMC Type II Mine)

  • The facility includes EMC (German EMC Type II) mines to simulate real-world ordnance and optimize the performance of detection systems under realistic conditions.

5. Multiple Burial Depths

  • Objects are buried at varying depths to simulate different detection and operational scenarios, enhancing the reliability of underwater surveys and system tests.

Training Features

  1. Realistic and Real Objects
    • The UXO Yard contains both realistic replicas and actual recovered ordnance, offering trainees the opportunity to familiarize themselves with a variety of target types.
  2. Controlled, Real-World Simulations
    • The facility enables hands-on experience in a secure, controlled environment that accurately replicates the challenges of detecting UXO in real underwater settings. The exact position and orientation of each object is well-known as ground truth for evaluating detection and classification performance.
  3. Scenario-Based Training
    • Operators can practice detection, identification, and response strategies under various conditions, including changing burial depths and differing object types.
  4. Sensor and Equipment Handling
    • Trainees gain valuable experience in handling and deploying detection sensors and equipment, helping to improve proficiency in real-world operations.

Objectives and Benefits

  • Enhanced calibration and validation of UXO detection technologies
  • Development and testing of new sensors and algorithms
  • Comprehensive hands-on training for field operators and safety teams
  • Contribution to maritime safety and environmental protection

With the UXO Yard, the Digital Ocean Lab provides a unique platform that supports both research and training for underwater safety and UXO detection.
