Long Night of the Sciences in Rostock

For weeks now, a colorful owl has been alerting the people of Rostock. In seven days, the time has come: for the Long Night of the Sciences, numerous scientific institutes and companies will once again open their doors to the curious and diverse audience of the Hanseatic city. Fraunhofer IGD will also provide insights into its research areas, which this year are entirely focused on artificial intelligence – the central theme of the 2019 Long Night of the Sciences. By the way, as part of the double anniversary 800/600, the Long Night of the Sciences 2019 will be a free event, a gift from the Hanseatic City of Rostock and its university.

Our Exhibits

How do you study fish that are swimming in large numbers in the water? We not only improve camera properties to make them easier to see – our algorithms also identify individual fish species, such as the sea trout that returns to the river landscapes of Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania to spawn. By researching their migration routes, the effectiveness of restoration measures such as fish ladders can be evaluated.

Artificial intelligence also helps people directly: in hospitals, it analyzes a patient’s vital signs and alerts staff to anomalies. The same applies in production environments, where unusual deviations in machine operation are automatically reported to humans.

Those looking for more action will find it with our Acoustic Eye: as marine researchers, you can use a kind of “X-ray vision” to explore the seabed even beneath the surface. With a VR headset and controller, you can virtually go searching for shipwrecks in the Baltic Sea. We will explain everything about VR technology in the context of underwater exploration.

We look forward to your visit!
