50 Years of GRIS & Computer Graphics Night 2025

Darmstadt celebrates half a century of cutting-edge research in visual computing

Press release /

On September 4, 2025, Fraunhofer IGD hosted a double celebration: In the afternoon, TU Darmstadt and Fraunhofer IGD jointly marked 50 years of “Graphical Interactive Systems” (GRIS). This was followed by the annual Computer Graphics Night, during which the best scientific work in visual computing was honored and current research was presented. Both events underscore Darmstadt’s leading role as a hub for future digital technologies.

(Darmstadt) The Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD in Darmstadt held its annual Computer Graphics Night (CGN) on September 4 — this year with a special anniversary: GRIS, the Department of Graphical Interactive Systems at TU Darmstadt, celebrated its 50th anniversary.

GRIS – A Success Story from Darmstadt

What began in 1975 with the first professorship for computer graphics in Germany has, through close collaboration between TU Darmstadt, Fraunhofer IGD, and numerous spin-offs, grown into one of the world’s most recognized centers for applied visual computing. GRIS stands for research, teaching, and innovation at the intersection of human and computer — with technologies that enhance our understanding, communication, and decision-making through visual data.

The Computer Graphics Night – A Stage for Scientific Excellence

For years, the CGN has been a highlight in Darmstadt's scientific calendar. The best scientific achievements in visual computing are honored here — including Best Thesis Awards for outstanding dissertations and final projects, and Best Paper Awards for internationally acclaimed publications. In addition to the awards ceremony, guests enjoyed inspiring expert presentations, insights into current research projects, and opportunities for personal exchange.

Significance for Science and Society

The combination of university research (TU Darmstadt), applied development (Fraunhofer IGD) and a successful technology transfer strategy has turned Darmstadt into a hotspot for visual computing. Applications range from medical technology and engineering to urban planning and mobility, as well as cultural heritage and virtual learning environments. Today, visual computing is a key area for a data-driven society — providing tools to make complex relations visible and understandable.

»50 years of GRIS means 50 years of pioneering work in visual computing. The close connection between basic research and application, between TU Darmstadt and Fraunhofer IGD, is a model that demonstrates how science and industry can jointly drive innovation. The Computer Graphics Night is not only a showcase for our scien-tific excellence but also underscores Darmstadt’s role as a leading location for groundbreaking digital technologies,« said Dr. Matthias Unbescheiden, Director of Fraunhofer IGD.
