Fraunhofer IGD supports companies in the maritime sector in carrying out well-founded assessments of specific AI use cases. Feasibility studies, technology potential analyses and demonstrators examine data quality, suitable methods, processes and platforms, creating a reliable basis for investment decisions.

Systematic Assessment of Maritime AI Use Cases

Fraunhofer IGD advises companies on the use of machine learning with maritime data. The starting point is the specific use case together with the available data and data sources. The assessment focuses in particular on data quality and suitability, appropriate learning methods, required processes and suitable platforms. The evaluation is vendor-neutral and conducted in accordance with scientific standards. This makes feasibility, potential and risks transparent at an early stage, supports more informed investment decisions and helps companies pursue AI initiatives more strategically.

From Feasibility Study to Demonstrator

Depending on the specific question, Fraunhofer IGD Rostock conducts feasibility studies and technology potential analyses or develops a demonstrator for early validation. The work is based on an in-depth understanding of maritime sensor data, particularly optical and acoustic data. Fraunhofer IGD also has its own sensors and GPU computing resources available for data generation and testing. Close cooperation with the University of Rostock, together with continuous monitoring of the state of the art and transferable solutions from other industries, further strengthens its consulting expertise.

Experience Across the Maritime Value Chain

The services are aimed at operators, technology suppliers, system integrators and maritime service providers. Fraunhofer IGD references include MARIA for data-driven services in ship operation, OTC-Tracker2Service for digital twins in ROV inspections, FIUM for the analysis of underwater imagery and EOMAP for embedded AI used to detect plastic pollution in the environment. OTC-Marikultur and OTC-Mariculture2 use AI-based image and video analysis to monitor and control aquaculture facilities, while OTC-SmartFishing applies AI to detect and classify fish in trawl nets.
