How can new technologies advance digitalization in Hesse? Dr. Nicolas Sölter, State Secretary at the Hessian Ministry for Digitalization and Innovation, explored this question during a visit to Fraunhofer IGD in Darmstadt. During a tour of the institute, the State Secretary gained insights into practical applications from various research fields and exchanged views with scientists on current technological developments.

The visit focused on the Center for Applied Quantum Computing (ZAQC), activities related to establishing a Hessian sensor technology cluster, the robot-assisted 3D scanning technology ROBBE, and the health innovation cluster HEINER.

ZAQC investigates which industrial challenges quantum computing may be able to address in a practical way in the future. The planned sensor technology cluster aims to strengthen collaboration and networking among stakeholders from science, industry, and government across Hesse.

With ROBBE, Fraunhofer IGD presented a technology for the autonomous acquisition and robot-assisted processing of complex components. HEINER, in turn, brings together health research, technological development, and clinical practice. The regionally focused cluster combines expertise from medicine, science, and industry with the goal of strengthening the Rhine-Main region as a leading hub for applied health research, medical innovation, and artificial intelligence in healthcare.

The exchange highlighted how Fraunhofer IGD's application-oriented research can support the state's digital policy objectives through the transfer of future technologies into practice, the networking of regional stakeholders, and the development of concrete solutions for industry, public institutions, and healthcare. The approaches presented directly align with the key priorities of the Ministry for Digitalization, including artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, and the digital transformation of businesses and public administration.
