Threedy Wins the Fraunhofer Founder Award 2022

The spin-off Threedy GmbH has won the Fraunhofer Founder Award, endowed with €50,000, which is awarded annually by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in cooperation with the High-Tech Gründerfonds. Threedy impressed the jury by revolutionizing the industrial use of 3D data.

The founding team of Threedy builds on 25 years of research at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD in Darmstadt to bring their technology to market, supported and mentored by Fraunhofer Venture. Founded in 2020, the spin-off has already achieved several major milestones—including raising €1.8 million in seed capital for the market launch of instant3Dhub.

The founding team understands the complexity and challenges involved in integrating industrial 3D data into modern software infrastructures and mixed-reality environments. Their goal is to make the use of industrial 3D data accessible to everyone and to simplify related processes. To achieve this mission, the team developed instant3Dhub, a highly flexible visual computing service platform. It combines state-of-the-art algorithms and research results and can be easily adapted to a wide range of application scenarios. Easy access to industrial 3D data and interaction with it is possible on any device. “instant3Dhub builds on existing cloud infrastructures, offers an excellent user experience, and can handle a wide variety of visual computing tasks,” explains Johannes Behr, co-founder and Head of Products at Threedy.

Von einfachen 3D-Apps bis zu hochkomplexen Experten-Tools

Despite its major successes, Threedy has further plans and aims not only to successfully implement its go-to-market strategy but also to continuously expand its product portfolio. This ranges from use cases involving simple 3D apps for dynamic processes to highly complex expert tools.

“The use of 3D data in industrial applications, expanding beyond its original focus on engineering, has gained significant momentum in recent years and will continue to accelerate due to megatrends such as digital twins and the industrial metaverse. This creates enormous potential for Threedy, which we aim to unlock through corresponding company growth,” says Christian Stein, Managing Director of Threedy GmbH.

Gregor Haidl, Senior Investment Manager at the High-Tech Gründerfonds, comments: “Threedy offers industrial customers innovative future-oriented concepts for the visualization and processing of 3D data. Threedy’s visualization platform enables cross-device integration of 3D data from various areas ranging from R&D to after-sales. Not least, it is also a potential game changer for the use of virtual and augmented reality technologies in industrial applications.”

Thomas Doppelberger, Head of Fraunhofer Venture, is enthusiastic about the founding team of Threedy GmbH: “We are impressed by how successfully the team led by Christian Stein has convinced well-known customers of the added value of instant3Dhub. This was already the case during their time at Fraunhofer IGD, and Threedy has been continuing this success story for more than two years now as a spin-off.”

The Fraunhofer Founder Award was established as part of Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s new spin-off and investment strategy and was awarded for the first time in 2016. It honors an active and successful market-ready spin-off whose products and services provide direct societal benefit. With this award, Fraunhofer Venture and the High-Tech Gründerfonds aim to recognize outstanding start-up projects and further promote spin-off initiatives within the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
