Throwback: Open Doors at Fraunhofer IGD

Digital Innovations You Can Experience Firsthand

Following a successful debut last year, the Manufacturing and Mobility division of the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD once again opened its doors to the public. The event built on the positive feedback from the Open Door Day held on November 6, 2024, which was organized in cooperation with the Automotive Cluster RheinMainNeckar. While the format has proven successful, this year it was expanded to target a broader audience – including participants from mechanical engineering, automotive manufacturing, the supplier industry, and software development.

Proven Format, New Impulses

As in the previous year, a guided demo tour through the institute was the highlight, allowing guests to experience current research projects and practical solutions from Fraunhofer IGD up close. In direct dialogue with researchers, key IT trends were presented – ranging from artificial intelligence and digital twins to visualization technologies and autonomous systems.

Topics demonstrated included:
• Autonomous 3D digitization and processing of components
• Visual analysis for decision support
• Fast simulation for engineering and 3D printing
• Image- and model-based quality assurance
• Cost-effective use of machine learning via synthetic training data
• XR-supported digital twins for training and education

Eye-Level Exchange

During the subsequent get-together with snacks and drinks, the exchange between science and industry was further deepened. Many attendees took the opportunity to make connections, discuss potential areas of collaboration, and spark new cooperation ideas.
