Ceremonial Colloquium for Heidrun Schumann

Even though farewells are always tinged with a sense of sadness, some people inspire us with their warmth to see every problem as a challenge and every ending as a new beginning. One such person is Prof. Dr. Heidrun Schumann, a native of Rostock and known to everyone as Heidi. After many years at the Institute for Visual and Analytic Computing, where she most recently held the Chair of Computer Graphics, she is now retiring.

Prof. Dieter W. Fellner, Director of Fraunhofer IGD, presents Prof. Heidi Schumann with the Fraunhofer Medal in recognition of her services to the Fraunhofer Society.

In addition to research and teaching, she not only raised her four own children, but also mentored many young scientists. Wonderful anecdotes from the graduates’ student days were complemented by contributions from national and international guests, who spoke about Schumann’s greatest passion: image-based computing. The Fraunhofer Society also expressed its gratitude: since January 1, 2015, she has served as a valued curator for Fraunhofer IGD. In recognition of these services, Institute Director Prof. Dr. Dieter W. Fellner awarded her the Fraunhofer Medal as an honorary distinction for her contributions to the Fraunhofer Society. The event was rounded off by the INI shanty choir, made up of former Fraunhofer IGD employees.
