AI Animal Welfare

The AI Animal Welfare project is developing methods to reliably measure animal welfare using AI and computer vision. Fraunhofer IGD contributes its expertise in camera-based analysis. The goals are to safeguard animal health, improve working conditions, and bring animal welfare and sustainability into alignment.

Collaborative project for animal welfare and the bioeconomy

The AI Animal Welfare project, funded by the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, brings together for the first time the expertise of leading partners from the life sciences, engineering, and social sciences. Whether laboratory mouse, chicken, or dairy cow: with the help of cameras, sensors, and artificial intelligence (AI), it should soon be possible to see at a glance how the animals are doing. The aim is to objectively assess animal welfare remotely and thus create better conditions in agriculture and research. To achieve this, image processing methods, bioacoustics, sensor technologies, and AI-based evaluation methods (e.g., pattern recognition, machine learning, big data analyses) are combined. This creates a novel setup that comprehensively maps animal welfare indicators and can be used long term in both research and agriculture.

Visual computing for smart farming

Fraunhofer IGD contributes its particular expertise in image- and model-based computer science to the consortium. Within the AI Animal Welfare project, the Smart Farming department develops and tests technologies for AI-based facial and voice recognition, visual motion analysis, and contactless recording of vital signs. In this way, Fraunhofer IGD supports the transfer of basic research into practical applications and ensures effective integration of the technologies into existing infrastructures.

Societal benefit and sustainable responsibility

AI Animal Welfare combines scientific excellence with a clear societal responsibility: both animal welfare and working conditions in agriculture are to be improved equally. With the new technologies, farmers can determine—without entering the barn—whether their animals are suffering from stress or pain and take targeted countermeasures. At the same time, the technologies help laboratory staff reduce the use of experimental animals. In addition, the results contribute to a sustainable bioeconomy by firmly anchoring animal welfare principles across all relevant sectors. With its strong networking across science, industry, and practice, the project ensures that research will lead in the long term to concrete hardware and software solutions that combine animal health, food safety, and societal acceptance.
