TRAFO – Transfer by Research Design

Opening up new pathways for knowledge transfer by involving policymakers and society in the R&D process

TRAFO developed practical methods and a digital tool to help researchers involve policymakers and society in research and innovation processes at an early stage. This enables societal requirements, sustainability aspects and regulatory frameworks to be taken into account during the development of new technologies.

Research Together with Policymakers and Society

Knowledge transfer does not end with the publication of research results. Especially when it comes to innovations with high societal relevance, political, regulatory and societal perspectives need to be taken into account throughout the research and development process. The TRAFO project therefore developed methods and approaches that enable researchers to systematically involve relevant stakeholders at the appropriate stages of their projects. The aim is to increase acceptance, address sustainability aspects at an early stage and improve the transfer of scientific results into industry and society.

Digital Support for Knowledge Transfer

The project developed a digital tool that supports researchers in planning and implementing transfer activities. It includes a Navigator that identifies the appropriate level of stakeholder involvement, an Atlas containing structured participation and collaboration methods, and the AI-powered assistant Dave, which provides tailored recommendations for suitable participation strategies. The methods were developed together with Fraunhofer High-Performance Centers, tested in real-world research projects and refined iteratively.

Added Value for Research and Innovation

The methods and tools developed in TRAFO help research organizations establish knowledge transfer involving policymakers and society as an integral part of research design. This makes it possible to take requirements from policymakers, industry and civil society into account at an early stage, increase societal impact and make innovation processes more effective. The results can be transferred to a wide range of research fields and are particularly valuable for mission-oriented research addressing issues of high societal relevance.
