FORESIGHT – Opto-Acoustic Underwater Inspection for Maritime Infrastructures

Project Motivation and Objectives

The maintenance and monitoring of maritime infrastructures such as offshore wind turbines, port facilities, and flood protection systems are becoming increasingly important in light of climate change and the energy transition. Traditional inspection methods reach their limits, especially under poor underwater visibility conditions. The FORESIGHT project aims to develop an innovative sensor system that enables reliable and efficient inspections regardless of visibility conditions.

Project Partners and Duration

Project partners include Fraunhofer IGD, Fraunhofer IOSB, and Fraunhofer IBMT. FORESIGHT was implemented in close cooperation with leading industry partners from the fields of marine technology, sensor technology, and artificial intelligence through a dedicated project advisory board. The project ran from January 2022 to December 2025.

Technological Approach and Innovation

Within FORESIGHT, a novel measurement system is being developed that combines acoustic and optical sensor technologies within an ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle). The system integrates high-resolution volumetric sonar with an optical stereo camera. The acoustic components enable data acquisition even in highly turbid water, while the optical unit provides detailed images in clear water. The innovative fusion of both data modalities enables comprehensive damage detection and documentation.

Project Progress and Key Challenges

During the project, particular emphasis was placed on developing algorithms for synchronized data fusion and integrating all sensor components into a compact and robust system. Key challenges included real-time data processing, pressure resistance of the hardware, and efficient energy supply for the system. The specially developed software platform enables automated analysis and the generation of mission reports with synchronized geo- and measurement data.

Results and Benefits

The result is a validated demonstrator that has proven its practical applicability in test environments as well as under real-world conditions. The FORESIGHT solution enables significantly more efficient, safer, and more objective inspection of maritime structures, thereby supporting the sustainable use and maintenance of critical infrastructure.

Outlook and Exploitation Potential

Given the growing market potential for underwater inspections, FORESIGHT offers a powerful and future-oriented solution. The project lays the foundation for the further development of automated and intelligent inspection systems.
