Stefan Wesarg

Stefan Wesarg studied Physics at the Technische Universität Berlin, Germany, the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Physique de Marseille, France, and the Universität Heidelberg, Germany. During his studies he specialized in Astrophysics and Medical Physics. He carried out his diploma thesis at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) Heidelberg, Germany, receiving his diploma degree in 2001.

From 2001 to 2007 he was a researcher at the Fraunhofer IGD Darmstadt, Germany, in the Department Cognitive Computing & Medical Imaging (deputy head from 2006 to 2007). There, he worked on several projects (industrial cooperation, EU funding, funded by the German government, private funding) in the field of medical imaging: ultrasound, medical navigation systems, and analysis of cardiac image data.

In 2007 he received his Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.) in Computer Science from the Technische Universität Darmstadt. From 2007 until end of 2011, he held a PostDoc position at the Interactive Graphics Systems Group (GRIS) at the Technische Universität Darmstadt. There, he built up the novel junior research group Medical Computing. Being head of that group he has successfully applied for research funding granted by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Since 2012 he is back at Fraunhofer IGD as head of the Competence Center Visual Healthcare Technologies. His current focus is on image-based intervention and surgery, ultrasound applications for diagnosis and treatment, statistical modeling of organs as well as medical simulation and planning.

Stefan Wesarg has been awarded the “Eurographics 2005 Medical Prize, 2nd&rdquo, for his contribution entitled “MEDARPA – An Augmented Reality System for Supporting Minimally Invasive Interventions”. Furthermore, his paper “Localizing Calcifications in Cardiac CT Data Sets Using a New Vessel Segmentation Approach” has been awarded “Best Paper 2006, 2nd” of the Journal of Digital Imaging. He is regularly working as reviewer for peer-reviewed journals (e.g. IEEE Trans Med Img, Int. Journal for CARS, Journal of Digital Imaging) as well as conferences and workshops (e.g. IEEE ISBI, MICCAI Workshops).
