dAIedge – The Future of AI Begins at the Edge of the Network

The future of artificial intelligence lies not only in central data centers but also directly at the edges of the network—on so-called edge devices. This form of decentralized AI processing makes it possible to analyze data directly at its point of origin, thereby reducing response times, lowering bandwidth requirements, and better protecting user privacy. The EU-funded project dAIedge addresses this very point: it is developing innovative technologies for the next generation of edge AI to keep Europe at the forefront of global technological competition.

Neuromorphic Image Processing for Edge AI – Research at Fraunhofer IGD

The focus of the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD is on the application of neuromorphic image processing—a technology specifically designed for energy-efficient, fast, and robust data analysis under difficult lighting conditions. This technology forms the foundation for the project’s pilot applications and enables real-time, intelligent decision-making directly at the point where data is generated.

Application Areas for Edge AI – How AI Works in Warehouses, Space, and Cities

Within the dAIedge project, Fraunhofer IGD coordinates the “Demonstrators” work package and is directly involved in the pilot projects Warehouse Logistics and Smart City—two of three examples that showcase the practical potential of edge AI.

1. Warehouse Logistics
In large warehouses, inventories must be monitored and managed around the clock. Human-robot collaboration can significantly increase efficiency here. Drones and robots equipped with edge AI analyze their environment in real time, carry out safety checks, and detect errors—without depending on central servers.

2.Smart Cities
Urban centers face the challenge of analyzing traffic in real time and quickly identifying dangerous situations. Edge AI makes it possible to process this data locally, without transmitting sensitive information over public networks. This local data processing protects privacy and enables faster traffic management.

3. Space Applications (Satellites)
Satellite data often has to be transmitted over long distances to Earth before it can be analyzed—a time-consuming and costly process. By preprocessing the data directly on board, only the most important information, such as ice surface detection, needs to be sent to Earth. This saves bandwidth and shortens response times.

dAIedge is laying the foundation for the next generation of intelligent, decentralized systems. The project fosters close collaboration between research institutions, industry, and technology providers to develop innovative solutions for the global challenges of a connected world.
