Head of Livestock Group, Fraunhofer IGD-R
Since 2023, Dr. Bastian Kubsch has headed the Livestock Group within the Competence Center Bioeconomy at Fraunhofer IGD-R, with a focus on animal welfare–oriented food production. In this role, he is responsible for the strategic and operational management of research and development projects in the field of animal welfare–oriented livestock monitoring using computer vision technologies, as well as for transferring these solutions into real-world applications in industry and practice.
As a former industry professional, he actively contributes to building up the field together with his colleagues, including establishing collaborations with industrial and academic partners. In 2024, he additionally assumed the role of Deputy Head of the Bioeconomy domain. His many years of experience in developing data-driven solutions, combined with his interdisciplinary expertise, enable him to transfer innovative technologies into new application areas.
Prior to joining Fraunhofer IGD-R, Dr. Kubsch worked as a data product manager and key account manager at a leading provider of data-based solutions. There, he specialized in the development and commercialization of innovative data products and worked closely with key customers to create tailored solutions. He gained entrepreneurial experience as a founder and technical developer of a smart farming startup that developed a remote sensing platform for arable land analysis. In this role, he drove technological innovations aimed at making agricultural production more efficient and sustainable.
Dr. Bastian Kubsch earned his PhD at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in the field of life sciences. His research at the intersection of biology and physics laid the foundation for his current work with data-driven analytical systems. His interdisciplinary approach and passion for digital technologies shape his contribution to the advancement of smart farming research at Fraunhofer IGD-R.
