  • Fraunhofer innovations for cultural heritage – a pilot project with the Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Dresden State Art Collections) and the Sächsischen Landesbibliothek, Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden (Saxon State and University Library Dresden) and further Saxon institutions.

    The board project of the Forschungsallianz Kulturerbe (Research Alliance ‘Cultural Heritage’) “Fraunhofer innovations for cultural heritage” will be implemented until 2018 in order to preserve and restore Saxon cultural assets. The main focus lies on different fields of application.

  • In November 2017, the Fraunhofer lighthouse project futureAM was launched with the aim of accelerating the Additive Manufacturing of metal components by at least a factor of 10. The focus of the activities is on the one hand the holistic view of the digital and physical added value from order entry to the finished metallic 3D-component, and on the other hand the leap into a new technology generation of additive manufacturing. Five other Fraunhofer Institutes are participating in this project under the leadership of the Fraunhofer ILT: IWS, IWU, IAPT, IGD and IFAM.

    GraMMaCAD - Methods to define material distribution more easily

    Today providing CAD models with locally varying properties is difficult and time-consuming for designers, engineers and 3D printing service providers.

    Common practice is either to divide the model into partial models, to which different materials are then assigned, or to carry out the material assignment using images (textures) in a preparatory step for 3D printing. The former generally only allows discrete material transitions, while the latter requires grading to be generated as a variation of the texture information.

  • Demographic development shows that today people in Germany are growing older. Even at an old age they want to live independently as long as possible and to stay in contact with their family and friends. In the future, smartwatches can support elderly people in their daily routine. The watches remind them for example of taking their medicine via vibration alarm or speech function. Relatives or care personnel can set up and manage these services easily on an internet platform.

This includes developing a new building concept that uses new manufacturing technologies (standardization of customization) and industry 4.0 IT to make possible both the efficient construction of buildings (industrial manufacturing) and the highly flexible use of those building.

    The Fraunhofer Centre is looking at “Human-Machine Interface for Future Car Driving”. The research is driven by Dr Olga Sourina who heads the Human-Computer Interaction research team at the Centre.
