Assuring the quality of individual biometric samples is crucial for maintaining the discriminatory power of biometric recognition systems as biometric data of low quality are likely to be mismatched. NFIQ stands for NIST Finger Image Quality software. It is widely recognized as a reference in fingerprint quality assessment. The NFIQ2 project develops a new and improved open-source version of NFIQ in consultation and collaboration with users and industry. The project is sponsored by NIST (National Institute for Standards and Technology) in the USA and BSI (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik) in Germany.
