Professional maintenance and repair of complex technical equipment and plants is an important component of industrial service offers. With the number of similar offers constantly increasing the service following delivery becomes more and more decisive for the customers’ purchase decision.
Technical equipment and plants get increasingly complex, customer demands become more and more specific and cost pressure on international markets gets higher. In this course the requirements on maintenance and its support by multimedia technical assistance systems and corresponding technologies incease.
In the joint project MAWI a product-related prototype supporting service tasks on plants and equipment has been developed. It includes tools for the creation of multimedia service instructions as well as software tools for mobile assistance in on-site maintenance and service. The software solution allows an optimised maintenance and efficient repair by providing the personnel with technical information on the respective plant in an exact and context-related way.
Advantages of a Mobile Maintenance Assistance
Costs of the documentation process are minimised: The documentation can be created on the basis of the construction data. Contents for various purposes (e. g. trainings, service or sales) can be generated from one common source.
Less service hours: On-site service hours can be reduced through optimal information. The maintenance technician profits from quick access to high-quality information. The reduction of service faults results in a smaller number of on-site operations.
Less expert hours: The information channel connecting the plant with the expert allows the handling even of complex tasks without the costly on-site presence of the expert. As in many cases the necessity of an expert's opinion is only seen on-site, a separate maintenance operation is not necessary and the problem can be solved more quickly.
Continuous improvement of documentation: By collecting data during maintenance and by their inclusion in the existing knowledge pool documentation is continuously improved. This proves to be especially important in the maintenance of plants with a poor documentation status.
Focus of Fraunhofer IGD
In the MAWI project Fraunhofer IGD developed different basic components for the prototype as well as software modules for the creation and use of a panorama view. With panorama view virtual on-site inspections can be made as well as annotations in the form of images or documents in order to facilitate project communication.
