Clean Sky is a Joint Technology Initiative (JTI) that will develop sustainable and breakthrough technologies such as new materials, aerodynamic models, environmentally friendly turbines, intelligent Life Cycle Assessment Tools to significantly improve the impact of the air transport on the environment. Fraunhofer IGD participates in two Integrated Technology Demonstrators (ITD) withing Clean Sky.

Simplified Life Cycle Assessment with Endami
By means of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the environmental impact of products throughout the entire product life cycle (production, use phase and recycling) are analyzed. Engineers and designers need appropriate software tools in order to be able to quickly evaluate the environmental impact of an aircraft even during the design process.
Challenges in the aviation industry
The aviation industry endeavors, in particular in the early product design phase, to understand how design decisions in the conceptual phase of new aircraft parts will impact the environment. The state-of-the-art LCA tools were primarily developed for LCA experts and are very complex to operate. This keeps designers from using these tools effectively. They need an intuitive software tool, supporting them in evaluating the environmental impact of the current product design and taking into consideration alternative design variations.
Parameterized models in LCA illustrate the connections between the materials used in a product as well as their processing methods. They are highly complex and serve as a calculation basis to analyze the environmental impact.
By means of semantic models, the researchers at Fraunhofer IGD have defined a level of abstraction which will exclusively make visible the parameters relevant to the designers such as material, weight, transport distance, based on parameterized models.
The research initiative JTI Clean Sky develops a simplified LCA tool. It is based on the professional LCA software GaBi and is easier to operate. It offers engineers and designers the possibility to quantify the environmental impact of their products during the design phase. They can test different design variations and identify key influencing parameters. The tool thus supports the decision-making process when selecting the best ecological solution.
