The market for biometric systems is young and experiencing dynamic growth. Quality and performance are constantly improving. However, individual products differ considerably and systems from different manufacturers do not necessarily work together or comply with the same standards. Due to the steadily improving technology and resulting increases in user convenience, biometrics is working its way into the consumer market and the demand for biometric systems is rising at an ever faster rate.
Independent Tests According to Defined Standards
The methodology and scope of tests that are currently conducted vary significantly and only a few procedures and testing laboratories are certified. There are already some established schemes for biometric systems but up to now only a few biometric products have been evaluated with them.
By completing standardized and certified tests, manufacturers receive a certificate indicating the quality of their products
and users can get an overview of the market situation.
Qualifications and Experience
Fraunhofer IGD has been conducting research in the area of biometrics since 1996. Our core competency is the analysis of the robustness against circumvention of biometric systems and the performance evaluation of biometric recognition capabilities. For example, we have examined the recognition capabilities of face recognition systems and the interaction between finger image sensors and algorithms for the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and in collaboration with the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) in the BioFace and BioFinger project series.
Certification and Standardization
As part of the European BEST Network project, which is funded under in the EU’s 7th Framework Programme for Research, Fraunhofer IGD is working on establishing a European competence network in the area of evaluation and certification of biometric devices and systems.
Fraunhofer IGD also chairs the relevant standardization bodies at the national and international levels (DIN NIA37 and ISO/IEC JTC1 SC37) and is also involved in specification of the “Evaluation Criteria for Biometric Systems”. That too speaks in favor of Fraunhofer IGD as the ideal partner for investigating biometric systems.
Services and Offer
With our evaluation laboratory for carrying out (security) tests on biometric systems, which works in accordance with the general regulations for testing and calibration laboratories (DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025), we offer you the option of having systems compared, tested or analyzed in studies either individually or combined. Uniform procedures and tools for structured, methodical testing of biometric systems ensure an objective evaluation.
Our services are offered to companies, government agencies and other organizations in Germany and abroad.
