Today, electronical nautical charts (ENCs) are commonly used to support the safe navigation of ships. It is an essential purpose of these electronical nautical charts to give information on water depths and their accompanying uncertainties. Thus, shipping routes that provide sufficient keel clearance at all times can be chosen.
The representation of water depths according to the S-52 charts standard is generally accepted. However, the present visualization of uncertainties and high quality data aspects is critically examined as it is difficult to understand and thus used rarely.
