    IoT-based assistant systems to help the elderly

    The “Internet of things”, typically known for its use in manufacturing and logistics, can utilize its strengths in this domain as well by assisting the elderly and allowing them to live in their own homes for as long as possible. How well it works has been demonstrated by the EU project “ACTIVAGE”, in which Fraunhofer IGD was involved.

    A new Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft research group at the Baltic Sea is developing underwater applications for more sustainable use of the ocean by humans. In their first project, researchers are exploring the issue of microplastics in the ocean.

    Smart pulmonary ultrasound for COVID-19

    Automated analysis of point-of-care ultrasound images assists in the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19.

    POCUS4Covid19 is a new type of software designed to make it easier for doctors to monitor a course of COVID-19 in a patient. To do this, the software automatically analyzes predefined indicators in ultrasound images of the lungs, making an evaluation easier.

    Graded components: interactive and immediate definition

    In GraMMaCAD, CAD models can be enhanced with functionally graded material transitions (e.g., from firm to flexible): The support foot from a multi-material 3D printer dampens components to which it is attached and cushions them.

    Functionally graded materials allow components to be optimized to meet requirements. This is why researchers at Fraunhofer IGD are using the application GraMMaCAD to elegantly and intuitively define material distributions in CAD models. Together with multi-material 3D printing, there now exist new possibilities for meeting more complex component requirements.

    What requirements does the electric motor need to meet? Are there parameters that can be neglected to save on cost? An uncluttered visualization helps designers, engineers and customers communicate with each other.

    Decisions are rarely made easily, especially when criteria are in conflict -- the visualization of alternatives helps. A tool by Fraunhofer IGD is making it easier for engineers to find the optimal design of a commissioned product, and allows for transparent, straightforward cost-benefit comparisons that reduce decision-making time.

    Fiber-optic network expansion for the future

    How Fibre3D makes fiber optics planning easier: The exact location of fiber-optic distribution boxes can be determined and sized in 3D, then attached to the permit application as a composite image.

    Fraunhofer IGD has developed software that further automates the planning process and makes it possible for Telekom workers to submit proposals to local governments without time-consuming site inspections. The software Fibre3D has just passed its first practical test.

Health@Hand is a visual control center for visualizing health and administrative data on a virtual representation of an actual ward or hospital and clearly displaying all relevant data for staff.

    How malignant lymph nodes can be diagnosed with ultrasound

    Fraunhofer IGD is developing software to detect malignant lymph nodes in ultrasound images.

    Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD are developing a digital platform for detecting malignant lymph nodes in the head and neck area from ultrasound images, making biopsies redundant in the process. For the Echomics software, developers are currently examining the informative value of numerous image markers and biomarkers. The software is slated for release in mid-2021.

    Augmented reality brings medical ultrasound into a new dimension

    Fraunhofer IGD’s AR technologies allow ultrasound images to be viewed directly on the patient.

    AR ultrasound has, for the first time, made it possible to superimpose topographical representations of ultrasound images directly on a patient, with the examiner seeing the sectional image in AR glasses. The process, developed by Fraunhofer IGD, is intended to improve the success of ultrasound-guided biopsy and surgery.

    The area all around the onshore control center for this new underwater testing ground will become the “Ocean Technology Campus”, located at the Rostock Freight and Fishing Port and offering a productive environment where high-tech maritime solutions can be developed and tested

    Things are happening at Rostock’s fishing port: Standard Aggregatebau Evers GmbH & Co. KG (SAB) in Bramow has constructed a new office building at the edge of the wharf and have just started work on a new, approx. 4,100 m² multipurpose building. What’s special about this new building is that SAB isn’t building it just for its own purposes, it’s also taking the first players of the Ocean Technology Campus (OTC) under its wing.

    Automated quality control makes high-vis clothing safer

    Automated optical quality control ensures to a greater degree and with greater precision that the high-vis clothing meets strict safety standards even after being washed.

    High-visibility or “high-vis” clothing provides many people safety in their day-to-day work. Fraunhofer IGD has paired with textile service provider MEWA to develop an automated system for inspecting the quality of this clothing faster and more reliably. Both companies have filed a joint patent for the system.

    A research group at Fraunhofer IGD in Darmstadt is following this year’s Oscars with particular interest: “Missing Link” has been nominated for Best Animated Film, in which every single facial expression was 3D-printed with the Cuttlefish software developed in Darmstadt.
