    Simply create your own technical training scenarios in Virtual Reality

    Machine@Hand 2.0 not only allows instructors to train users by means of VR, but also to create their own modules.

    Fraunhofer IGD of Rostock will be showcasing Machine@Hand 2.0, the beta version of its VR learning environment, at this year’s Hannover Messe. Machine@Hand 2.0 facilitates the creation of effective VR scenarios for training in the use of complex machinery, systems and technical processes. The VR learning environment is combined with an easy-to-use authoring tool. The VR modules can be readily integrated into existing LMS platforms and e-learning modules.

    The autonomous, colour-faithful 3D scanning system CultArm3D GT10 by Fraunhofer IGD automatically and safely generates high-resolution 3D scans -- perfect for use in museums.

    The Fraunhofer IGD in Darmstadt has developed a product to make it easier for museums to digitize their collections and is now cooperating with Danish camera manufacturer Phase One. The mobile scanner CultArm3D delivers precise 3D models of exhibits of various sizes at the push of a button.

    Ocean Technology Campus Rostock distinguished as future cluster

    Rostock’s growth as a location and region for innovative, forward-looking research continues to gain traction. Today in Berlin, Minister of Education and Research Anja Karliczek announced the winners of the first round of her ministry’s “Clusters4Future” competition. From now on, seven new regional innovation networks may call themselves future clusters, including the Ocean Technology Campus Rostock.

    Rostock researchers develop a new underwater vehicle with flexible equipment.

    A project group in Rostock has developed a modular system for underwater vehicles consisting of components that can be readily combined with each other. These modular remote-operated vehicles (ROVs) can be used in various scenarios -- a first in underwater technology. The prototype has now passed testing in the Baltic Sea.

    instant3Dhub is easily connected to existing PLM systems and leverages 3D data of any size and any format on any device within any applications.

    Threedy is a spin-off from Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD in Darmstadt, Germany. It has now raised early-stage venture capital to commercialize its instant3Dhub platform. This platform primarily supports visualization, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications, and will initially serve companies in the automotive, aerospace and energy industries, as well as users of building information modeling (BIM) solutions.

    Computer Graphics Night 2020 – Award winners

    The Computer Graphics Night took place completely digital in 2020.

    As every year, the Computer Graphics Night was looking for the brightest minds in visual computing - but this year in an unusual form: The event had to take place completely virtually. The award ceremony took place nevertheless and the jury, consisting of scientists of the Fraunhofer IGD and chairs associated with the institute, chose this year's winners in the usual way. We congratulate once again and thank the numerous guests, who have given us a wonderful winter evening also in the 22nd edition.

    The “Internet of things”, typically known for its use in manufacturing and logistics, can utilize its strengths in this domain as well by assisting the elderly and allowing them to live in their own homes for as long as possible. How well it works has been demonstrated by the EU project “ACTIVAGE”, in which Fraunhofer IGD was involved.

    The interdisciplinary Fraunhofer research team "Smart Ocean Technologies" in Rostock is working on underwater vehicles to analyze microplastics in the oceans.

    A new Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft research group at the Baltic Sea is developing underwater applications for more sustainable use of the ocean by humans. In their first project, researchers are exploring the issue of microplastics in the ocean.

    Smart pulmonary ultrasound for COVID-19

    Automated analysis of point-of-care ultrasound images assists in the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19.

    POCUS4Covid19 is a new type of software designed to make it easier for doctors to monitor a course of COVID-19 in a patient. To do this, the software automatically analyzes predefined indicators in ultrasound images of the lungs, making an evaluation easier.

    Graded components: interactive and immediate definition

    In GraMMaCAD, CAD models can be enhanced with functionally graded material transitions (e.g., from firm to flexible): The support foot from a multi-material 3D printer dampens components to which it is attached and cushions them.

    Functionally graded materials allow components to be optimized to meet requirements. This is why researchers at Fraunhofer IGD are using the application GraMMaCAD to elegantly and intuitively define material distributions in CAD models. Together with multi-material 3D printing, there now exist new possibilities for meeting more complex component requirements.

    The recent COVID-19 pandemic have increased the value of hygienic and contactless identity verification. However, the pandemic led to the wide use of face masks, essential to keep the pandemic under control. The effect of wearing a mask on face recognition in a collaborative environment is currently sensitive yet understudied issue.

    What requirements does the electric motor need to meet? Are there parameters that can be neglected to save on cost? An uncluttered visualization helps designers, engineers and customers communicate with each other.

    Decisions are rarely made easily, especially when criteria are in conflict -- the visualization of alternatives helps. A tool by Fraunhofer IGD is making it easier for engineers to find the optimal design of a commissioned product, and allows for transparent, straightforward cost-benefit comparisons that reduce decision-making time.
