    Graded components: interactive and immediate definition

    In GraMMaCAD, CAD models can be enhanced with functionally graded material transitions (e.g., from firm to flexible): The support foot from a multi-material 3D printer dampens components to which it is attached and cushions them.

    Functionally graded materials allow components to be optimized to meet requirements. This is why researchers at Fraunhofer IGD are using the application GraMMaCAD to elegantly and intuitively define material distributions in CAD models. Together with multi-material 3D printing, there now exist new possibilities for meeting more complex component requirements.

    The recent COVID-19 pandemic have increased the value of hygienic and contactless identity verification. However, the pandemic led to the wide use of face masks, essential to keep the pandemic under control. The effect of wearing a mask on face recognition in a collaborative environment is currently sensitive yet understudied issue.

    What requirements does the electric motor need to meet? Are there parameters that can be neglected to save on cost? An uncluttered visualization helps designers, engineers and customers communicate with each other.

    Decisions are rarely made easily, especially when criteria are in conflict -- the visualization of alternatives helps. A tool by Fraunhofer IGD is making it easier for engineers to find the optimal design of a commissioned product, and allows for transparent, straightforward cost-benefit comparisons that reduce decision-making time.

    Fiber-optic network expansion for the future

    How Fibre3D makes fiber optics planning easier: The exact location of fiber-optic distribution boxes can be determined and sized in 3D, then attached to the permit application as a composite image.

    Fraunhofer IGD has developed software that further automates the planning process and makes it possible for Telekom workers to submit proposals to local governments without time-consuming site inspections. The software Fibre3D has just passed its first practical test.

    Uwe Freiherr von Lukas is the new professor of maritime graphics in the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the University of Rostock. The president of the university, Prof. Wolfgang Schareck, awarded the head of Fraunhofer IGD’s Rostock location the title of “Universitätsprofessor”, Germany’s highest academic title, effective July 1, 2020.

    Fraunhofer IGD has developed software that networks various sensors together to detect domestic situations and perform actions, primarily helping older generations in everyday life. Connecting these sensors to an alarm system eases the burden on nursing staff, helps family members and optimizes medical care.

    As part of the BDI Web-Summit for the Digital Day 2020 on the topic "COVID-19: Ejection seat into the digital future?" Fraunhofer IGD presents a compact information center for use in hospitals or nursing facilities. Health@Hand is a visual control center for visualizing health and administrative data on a virtual representation of an actual ward or hospital and clearly displaying all relevant data for staff.

    How malignant lymph nodes can be diagnosed with ultrasound

    Fraunhofer IGD is developing software to detect malignant lymph nodes in ultrasound images.

    Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD are developing a digital platform for detecting malignant lymph nodes in the head and neck area from ultrasound images, making biopsies redundant in the process. For the Echomics software, developers are currently examining the informative value of numerous image markers and biomarkers. The software is slated for release in mid-2021.

    Passport photos in Germany only digital

    The German government has passed a draft law to the effect that passport photos will in future only be accepted digitally in order to increase security against forgery. In concrete terms, this is all about morphing: several faces are merged into one.

    Personalized treatment of inflammatory bowel disease

    It is difficult to immediately identify the best medication. In the future, it is hoped a software tool will be able to automatically compare disease progression for large groups of patients, giving medical professionals actionable information for personalized, targeted treatment.
