Aced the test: The Darmstadt Graphics Group (DGG) took home two awards at this year’s Startup & Innovation Day. In a one-minute pitch, the spinoff of Fraunhofer IGD outlined to the nearly one thousand people in attendance how they plan to revolutionize 3D web applications. Their self-developed software, RapidCompact, was designed to be the first “MP3” for 3D web data--no small task. To achieve this, the software first compresses the data enough so it can be displayed online smoothly. The mesh generated by the polygons is then automatically reduced in a pipeline and regenerated without a visually noticeable reduction in quality. The result convinced attendees, who had the chance to vote live for their favorites. DGG not only won people’s hearts, it also won first place for Best One-Minute Pitch. In addition to this sensational performance, DGG also took third place in Best Startup over 80 other competitors.
“Making 3D Accessible” is the slogan of the four-person team from Darmstadt. The sluggishness of the mass of 3D data has been a thorn in their side since back in 2014, so they developed the software InstantUV at Fraunhofer IGD. The algorithms tamed the vast sea of 3D data that can now be visualized with considerably less effort. Four years and a great deal of research, experience, passion and one doctorate later, and this successful project turned into a new company: InstantUV is now RapidCompact and is ready for the market. Not only does the software process at lightning speed, it automatically optimizes all 3D data workflows. Before, reducing 3D data for online display needed to be done by hand--what used to take hours then can now be done in 30 seconds. The software also automatically generates high-quality UV layouts and texture maps. With glTF, the model can even be exported for use in the ever-more popular 3D Viewer in web browsers. This expands the potential user group significantly, since extensive knowledge of 3D data is no longer required to use it.
Startup & Innovation Day
HIGHEST, the startup and innovation center at the Technische Universität Darmstadt, organized the third annual Darmstadt Startup & Innovation Day on October 22, 2018. The event was held at the darmstadtium conference center and serves as a stage for startups to optimize the interaction between commerce, politics and science. In addition to the startups exhibition, the award ceremony was the high point for visitors and exhibitors alike.
