Hong Kong’s Secretary for Innovation and Technology visited Fraunhofer IGD in Darmstadt. In addition to visual computing technologies, the Far Eastern visitor was interested in the Fraunhofer model and cooperation options.
(Darmstadt/Hong Kong/Singapore) Fraunhofer IGD is the international leading research institute for applied visual computing. The institute’s work on technologies such as 3D digitization, virtual and augmented reality, and 3D visualization attracts international attention. One prime example is Hong Kong’s Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Nicholas W. Yang, who visited Darmstadt on September 27.
The special guest was introduced to visual computing solutions for the fully automated 3D digitization of cultural assets, for virtual and augmented reality, and for the real-time visualization of digital 3D models in industrial applications. The Secretary was particularly fascinated by the solutions based on Fraunhofer IGD’s platform strategies, which make it possible to process even very large and complex 3D models interactively, even on very small mobile end devices. Secretary Yang was very impressed by the degree of Fraunhofer’s research innovation.
In addition to Professor Dieter W. Fellner, Head of Fraunhofer IGD, Secretary Yang was also welcomed by Professor Wolfgang Müller-Wittig, head of the Singapore site (Fraunhofer IDM@NTU) and responsible for the visual computing research of Fraunhofer IGD in the region. »The visit gave us a chance to engage in intensive discussions on the globally unique concept of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft,« explains Müller-Wittig. »In this context, potential cooperation options were also taken into consideration.«
