How can sculptures and artifacts be made accessible to people all over the world and conserved for posterity? By using the CultLab3D concept. Developed by Fraunhofer IGD, this scan technology impressed with its innovative approach at this year's Digital Leader Award, winning the Special Award for Innovation.
CultLab3D is a digitization facility developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD. Extensible as required, it uses autonomous robots and optical scanning technologies which can digitize objects in less than 10 minutes. CultLab3D has a resolution within the sub-millimeter range and can scan two objects at the same time. This new approach to 3D mass digitization not only safeguards irreplaceable cultural treasures, but can also be put to good use in industry.
