This paper presents the results of an evaluation and comparison of the most widely used "state-of-the-art" page description languages in the graphics and document processing community. It provides functional requirements and recommendations for the proposed definition of Digital Document Final Format (DDFF), which is still not a specified proprietary component of compound Document Architecture (CDA). The presented suggests that DDFF, using the PostScript imaging model, should extend its functionality for better completion of the CDA goals. Further, the recommendations provided in this paper may be useful in elaborating Digital's position in the ISO process of definition and refinement of SPDL.(AGD)

It defines two fundamental terms: the specialization hierarchy and the aggregation hierarchy. The most important topic is the design of a specialization hierarchy for document processing. Separate chapters are concerned with attributes and with constraints, that are handled as a special type of attributes.(AGD)

This paper investigates the perspective transformation of arbitrary content in compound documents, with particular attention to text, graphics and raster image content. The four point transformation is presented as a way to facilitate the mapping of 3D objects to 2D objects and to transform 2D DDIF content with a pseudo-perspective transformation. The algorithm to compute the transformation matrix is derived. The related problems are analyzed and some algorithms are referenced to allow the handling of raster image content. A rough proposal is presented for an enlargement of the DDIF base of geometric primitives, that should be invariant under a four point transformation.(AGD)

This paper is an introduction to the implementation and a user guide for an object oriented document processing prototype. This prototype was written in the Trellis/Owl environment by the Fraunhofer-AGD at Darmstadt to demonstrate and evaluate some concepts of object oriented document processing. This work shows among others that some object oriented extensions of the C programming language (like C++) might be source of several limitations during the implementation of advanced document processors.(AGD)

This paper presents a taxonomy of methods for colouring the plane. It suggests the development of, and provides the functional requirements for an application program which is useful in assisting the interactive process of the definition of arbitrary fill patterns and methods ("fancy ink" editor). Following current practice, the authors then investigate the particular problem of the implementation of rectangular tiled patterns, and its consequences for Digital Interchange Format (DDIF). The proposed improvements of the DDIF specification should facilitate the general definition of user specified arbitrary patterns and their efficient handling using built-in hardware features.(AGD)

In the world of electronic publishing page description languages describe a very powerful interface between document creation software and raster output devices. 3D graphics systems offer the possibility to give a more or less realistic description of the 3D world. The current page description languages support 2D graphics only. However, documents also need graphics descriptions that contain 3D information. DaScript Plus provides a sufficient mapping of the PHIGS PLUS functionality. It allows the device independent incorporation of realistic 3D pictures within documents, and their high quality output on laser printers and type setters.(AGD)
