Welcome to the Competence Center »Identification and Biometrics« of Fraunhofer IGD. Our mission is to work on projects in the broad area of biometrics.
In gerneral biometrics means recognition of humans by a machine. Special characteristics of humans are used to achieve this. Most known approaches are recognition by fingerprint, iris, or face. But there are a lot more of methods like vein pattern, gait or signature recognition.
Companies, administrative bodies or the public in general easily can get lost in the variety of methods and different vendors and suppliers. There is a strong demand for competent consultation, assessment, and research. With the help of our specialized evaluation laboratory we are able to provide sound predication about any system related to usability, reliability and security. Our offer aims in particular at companies, administrative bodies and associations.

3D Face
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) seeks for technologies and processes that are suitable for automated self-identification at international borders that will enable unattended border crossing. The performance of 2D face recognition is not satisfactory by far because it is very sensitive to pose variation, illumination situation and other disturbance factors. Moreover there are no reliable mechanisms for liveness detection and protection against spoofing and identity hiding attacks.
The 3D Face project is focused on 3D face recognition technology research, including fusion with 2D face recognition technologies, and its application in secure environments. The department »Security Technology for Graphic and Communication Systems« of the Fraunhofer IGD is in charge of the sub-project »Research and Technology«. Within this sub-project the biometrics experts of Fraunhofer IGD are further developing recognition algorithms and are responsible for the development of the prototype.
