Institute management

Professor Dieter W. Fellner has been a professor of computer science at the Darmstadt Technical University and institute director of Fraunhofer IGD since October 2006. He previously held academic positions at the Technical University (TU) of Graz, TU Braunschweig, the University of Bonn, the Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, and the University of Denver, Colorado. He continues to be associated with the Technical University of Graz where he is head of the Institute for Computer Graphics and Knowledge Visualization, which he founded in 2005.

Founded

The history of Fraunhofer IDG began back in 1987 when a study group was started by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft at the Technical University of Darmstadt. The Rostock location joined in 1992. The Visual Computing business unit of Fraunhofer Austria Graz (2009) and Fraunhofer IDM@NTU in Singapore (2010) are direct fellow subsidiaries and locations.

Number of staff members and other employees

All four locations of Fraunhofer IGD have a staff of about 180.

This resulted in a personnel capacity of a total of 160 person years in 2009.

Number of external staff

There are also about 60 full time external staff members among the researchers

Budget

The total operating budgets of Fraunhofer IGD for 2009 amounted to about 17 million euros. About 78 percent of this amount was allocated to Darmstadt, 17 percent to Rostock, about 2 percent to Graz, and about 3 percent to Singapore.

Projects

Researchers of Fraunhofer IGD work on more than 260 studies, consultation and research projects per year.
