The objective of the EU project „FAST and efficient international disaster victim IDentification“ (FASTID) is to establish a new international database to improve the identification of victims after natural disasters with respect to efficiency and speed.
It is headed by INTERPOL and involves the project partners Bundeskriminalamt, Crabbe Consulting Ltd., Fraunhofer, Plass Data A/S and the University Dundee.
The identification of disaster victims based on the facial images is complicated by rapid post-mortem changes. Within the work package Image Retrieval, the Fraunhofer IGD develops an image based disaster victim identification module which supports the identification of persons based on face images. Spatial facial models are calculated from several images of a subject. Changes of the face shape induced by early post-mortem effects are modeled in order to consider these deformations in the comparison process.
