Our world is being increasingly recorded in three dimensions. When it comes to city planning, knowledge transfer, and toursim, 3D computer models are growing in significance. A travel guide, for example, is more appealing if it is based on three-dimensional data and multimedia content has been integrated into it. Navigation systems and virtual globes like Google Earth and MS Virtual Earth have already reached a mass audience. The challenge now consists of making 2D and 3D geodata useful for diverse areas of application and different terminal devices. In addition, geoinformation is also becoming increasingly important in space-time critical applications like emergency management and deployment planning.
